Their first child, a daughter, named Susanna, was born on May 26, 1583. Two years later, on February 2, 1585, twins were born ( a son Hamnet and a girl Judith) . Hamnet later died of unknown causes at the age of 11.
After the birth of the twins, there are seven years of William Shakespeare's life where no records exist. Scholars call this period the ”lost years”.
In 1587 Shakespeare went to work in London, leaving his family at home. There is a story that Shakespeare’s first work in London was holding a rich men’s horses at the theatre door. But nobody can say whether this story is true. Later Shakespeare became an actor and a member of one of the big acting companies. Soon he began to write plays for this company and in a few years became a well-known author.
In 1593 the plague (чума) , a terrible disease, killed thousands of people and theatres were closed.
During this time William started to write poems instead of plays. His short poems are called sonnets.
The Globe Theatre.
Shakespeare helped to build a new theatre called “The Globe” on the bank of the River Thames . It was opened in 1599. It was round and there was no roof on this building.
The theatre had space for 3000 people. At The Globe some people stood in front of the stage and others had seats. No women acted in Shakespeare’s time: men and boys played all the parts.
The Globe Theatre.
In those days in the 16 th and 17 th centuries people had neither radio nor a newspaper, that’s why the theatre played an important part their lives.
In those days the people of London, young and old, rich and poor, loved the Globe Theatre very much. The poor people could not pay much for the tickets and they stood or sat on the ground in the yard. Rich people and their wives sat on the balconies and aristocrats were allowed to sit on the stage.
